Pondy is amazing place. It is very similar to Goa with less crowd.

If you don't like too much crowd then you will like this place.

You need to go via chennai.

EDIT : Recent update: Best route now. NAM expressway is completed.

Hyderabad --> Narketpally(take left) --> Nalgonda --> Piduguralla --> Addanki --> Ongole(take right) --> Chennai --> Pondicherry.

We took the above route while going from Hyderabad to Chennai, I felt little stressed out between Nalgonda and Ongole.

While coming back from Chennai we took the following route.

Pondicherry --> Chennai --> Vijayawada --> Suryapet --> Hyderabad

Via Vijayawada is 4 lane all the way and less stressful but distance is more.

Via Nalgonda and Addanki road is good but some construction patches are being laid during our travel.

Both roads are decent enough. I will suggest you to try out both the routes.:cooler:

I am aware of the route via vijayawada... the road condition is excellent but long, just wanted to know the alternative route and its condition. Thanx for the info

Drive time will be almost same for both the routes.

Personally, I will always prefer the longer and better route, If there is no much difference in total average.

Hi, I am planning on a drive to pondicherry in the month of August.. Please suggest me the must visit places in Pondicherry also suggest me if August month is the right time to visit the place

Pondicherry is one of the serene beach destinations in India which is nicknamed “French colony of the southâ€.

It reflects a unique harmony between the Indian culture and the french colonialism.

Beaches, French architectural wonders and a wide range of churches contribute to the beauty of Pondy..

Let me list a few places one shouldn't miss:

1) Sri Aurobindo Ashram

2) Auroville

3) Immaculate Conception Cathedral church

4) Basilica of the sacred heart of Jesus

5) Promenade beach

6) French war memorial

7) Pondicherry museum

8) Arikamedu

9) Chunnambar backwaters

10) Paradise and Serenity beaches

Thanks a lot for those valuable suggestions guys.. I think thats more than required for me to spend a weekend over this place.

Can somebody help me on suggesting the best place to stay and eat too..

We have so far decided to stay around James street and may vary depending on your suggestions.. Preferrably an economic beach resort.. TIA :)

St. James court beach resort has pretty good deluxe rooms and i wouldn't carry a second thought in suggesting this place to any of my friends.. It has a great view of the beach from the balcony.

Rendezvous is one place where i had some lip smacking food during my pondy trip.

Thanks a lot again.. I have finally done the trip and your information has helped me a lot..

I would like to add in another place to the visit list which i felt was the best amongst the ones close to pondicherry.

Its 'Pichavaram' mangrove forest. It is the 2nd largest mangrove forest after Sunderbans and is ~60kms from Pondicherry. A boat ride into those backwaters was a thrilling experience. I would recommend this place to all the people driving down to Pondicherry. Have a safe trip

Driving form Hyderabad to Pondicherry?

You can now avoid Vijayawada route completely. NAM expressway is almost complete, you can take the following route.

Hyderabad --> Narketpally(take left) --> Nalgonda --> Piduguralla --> Addanki --> Ongole(take right) --> Chennai --> Pondicherry.

I have recently did Hyderabad to Chennai.

This time I decided to take Nalgonda route instead of regular route i.e via Vijawayada

You are taking the right track .. stick on with it. And your start time brings in a lot of difference.. If possible start by 4 AM since it is a long way down and also helps in escaping the early traffic until piduguralla.. :)

You would be reaching Piduguralla by 8 AM and you can stop by any restaurant on the highway in that stretch.. Hotel Murugan on this road before reach Piduguralla would be a very decent option in this highway.

Hotel Ashik Grand Paradise and Amaravathi family restaurants will be good options to stop by for lunch in Gudur which is about 4-5 hours from Piduguralla..

Hope this is helpful for your travel in this route

Is the Nalgonda route a 4-lane highway? We would like to stop for the night at some place midway. Any suggestions?

Yes it is 4-lane.

Nellore is ideal for stopover and they have decent stay options.

Nalgonda-Ongole: It is a 4-lane toll road, very limited food options.

Day 1:
Hyderabad > Nalgonda > Ongole > Nellore

Ideal food/bio stopovers to negate the Nalgonda-Ongole stretch.

  • Hotel Vivera,  Just before Narketpally.
  • NH5 toll plaza food court, After crossing Ongole.

Keep on eye on dogs/cows/village traffic between Nalgonda and Ongole.

Day 2:
You can cover Mahablipuram beach en-route.
You can also explore the Airbnb beach stays in Mahabalipuram.
Or ride down to Pondicherry along NH5

Yes, the route is 4 way between Nalgonda and Ongole. You anyways get on to the amazing NAM expressway after Addanki near Ongole. You will come across a few congestions near Piduguralla and Addanki. Few very small stretches on these roads are bad to break speed but the rest of the roads are very good.

Also, I would recommend you to break for a day at Nellore. Nellore has got some really decent hotels for a night stay. I would suggest Minerva Grand, Seasons Inn and Athithi Grand hotels at Nellore.

Safe rides!

Thanks! FYI, we are coming from the opposite direction. Starting out from Pondicherry!

The recommendations for either ways remain the same, You can enjoy the Pulicat lake enroute on Day :1.

If you still decide to do more miles on Day : 1 after crossing Nellore, Next big town to choose your stays would be Ongole.

But, Nellore is a better town when compared to Ongole.

Since you are planning to do this at a decent speed, I feel you wouldn’t want to drive for a long day unless you are 2 drivers.
If you are planning to do this in 1 day, I would recommend you the below route which is best

Hyderabad --> Narketpally --> Nalgonda --> Piduguralla --> Addanki --> Ongole(take right) --> Chennai --> Pondicherry.

You can stop by below places for food and I would recommend you to start early.

Hotel Vivera,  Just before Narketpally for breakfast.

NH5 toll plaza food court, After crossing Ongole for lunch.

Yes you can happily include Rameshwaram if you have a window for 7 days.

You can do pichavaram mangroves too which is about 60 to 70 kms  which takes around 1 hour from Pondicherry.

In Pondicherry, You can check out paradise beach, Serenity beach, Rock beach, Kairakal beach, Ousteri lake, French War memorial, Auroville, Villa Helena, La Maison Rose.

Around or enroute you can check out, Pulicat lake, Mahabalipuram, Pichavaram.

As of now, there are no covid restrictions in Pondicherry for travellers

Hyderabad to Hamsaladeevi Beach - A hidden Paradise

After a long wait for the December trip, we kick started our vacation to the most beautiful Hamsaladeevi beach located in the Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh.

Usually many of them skip this place due to lack of accommodation, but you will find a decent stay in Vijayawada which is around 80 kms approximately from Hamsaladeevi. It is definitely worth travelling so far to see the beauty of this Sagara Sangamam, where river Krishna meets the Bay of Bengal.

We started at an early hour from Hyderabad and reached Vijayawada by 10 AM and checked into the OYO hotel. There are no food joints available at Hamsaladeevi beach so we packed the lunch from the hotel and headed out. Vijayawada to Hamsaladeevi drive took us 3 hours with some breaks.

Hamsaladeevi village is 24 kms away from Avanigadda and we reached Hamsaladeevi by 3 PM. After a long drive from Hyderabad, there was an adrenaline rush gushing out to see this most beautiful place and couldn't wait to snap the sandy beach and the 'river-beach' meeting point. This point is 2 km away from the beach (From Hamsaladeevi village, beach is 4 kms) and we drove our car on the beach side shore to the port to see the confluence.

      Distance : 376 km
      Ride: Honda City
      Fuel : Petrol
      Mileage : 15 kmpl
Hotel : OYO rooms (2000/- per night)

Note: Don't take any diversions from the mentioned route else you might end up between bad conditioned roads and longer distances as you pass
