Dash Cams in India

Recommended Posts

Our traffic system is getting worst day by day. After lot of deliberation I finally took the plunge and bought a dash cam.

If you love doing road trips, it is a worthy Investment.

Advantages

-In India bigger vehicle is always guilty during accidents, It doesn't matter who made a mistake. Dash cam helps in getting the first hand evidence.

-Undisciplined drivers and abusers can be kept at a bay. Last week a cab driver(Innova) cutting lanes like a maniac got stuck behind me. After overtaking me he started abusing. I simply pointed the cam and he drove off.

-Record your road trips. You don't need to fiddle with your SLR if you find an awesome view while you are driving.

-These are widely popular in Russia. Come very handy specially during Insurance claims.

-You can easily capture the Hit and Run cases.

-In some remote areas people try to stage an accident to extort money from you. Dash cam helps in preventing it.

-Dash cams are getting advanced. Dash cams are now directly connected to phones via App.

-If you want to share any video you can easily transfer the video to your phone and share it. All this can be done without any external device.

How dash cam works?

Dash cam is a fix it and forget it device.

Dash cam will start and stop automatically as your car moves.

You don't need to fiddle with the controls every time.

Usual cameras write data to the memory card. Once the memory is full It stops working. But dash cam loops the videos, It will overwrite memory card on the top of the previous videos.

In the case of any misfortune event. Advanced dash cam automatically saves those videos to a different location preventing them from the over write.

Saved video consists of footage before and after the crash so that you don't miss any details.

Dash cam will have a wide angle lens It helps in covering more area than a regular cam.

Dash cams will have better night vision.

Installation is very easy. mount the camera, tuck the long wire into roof lining followed by A-Pillar and dash board. No tools required for the set-up it just a plug and play.

image_2836.jpg

Camera mounted on the windshield. No dangling wires across the windsheild.

View from the front. I have pasted a black carbon fiber sticker so that camera wont stick out.

Dash cams are really helpful!! Long story cut short! We faced a situation few days back where a speedy biker(without helmet) suddenly appeared infront of our car(moving slowly. I can say gear 1) and started blaming us pointing that it's our mistake.

We saved the video immediately from the dash cam and showed it to the people who surrounded us!!

Everyone realised whose mistake it was and dispersed!!

So guys dash cam is a must in every car!! Indian government should make it mandatory for every car makers to install the dash cam by default!!

Agree with you, It should be built in for the new cars.

Commercials vehicles and cabs should have them.

Government should impose a new rule, No insurance claim without a dash cam.

Thanks for sharing guys..

It's a nice little device helpful to record and share all types of incidents happening during our every day drive, such as Bad Drivers, accidents etc. that would benefit a lot of people and also make them visually see things that we have actually witnessed...

Can you suggest the best available dash cam in the market..?

I'm very happy with this built quality and its resolution which not only helps me get good videos but also great pictures..

but i'm facing a visibility issue during the night drive in the cam..

Is there a better version for this as I do most night drives most of the time..

Srinivas :Just wondering, Can we use sjcam action cam as dash cam in car.

You cannot use action camera as a dash cam. Following are the reasons.

  1. Dash cam has Auto start and stop feature. No need to fiddle with controls every time you start the car.
  2. Dash cam has Accident detection, It automatically saves the video to a separate folder.
  3. Heat management, Action cams wont even last for month with continuous charge.
  4. Wide angle, Dash cams generally has more coverage area than actions cams.
  5. Dash cam is like fix it and forget it. It cannot be same with action cam.

That is a good deal, I spent around 4.5k, almost one and half year back.
How many days did it take for shipping?
How much for customs?

Congrats.
Good decision.

Did you get 64gb memory card, I think it has to be class 10

Yep, initially surprised that the package did not have a card in it and then later tried my regular card and it scolded me to install a Class 10 card, ordered a Sandisk Class 10 64GB using Amazon Prime and got the card next day and installed it!

Only question I have / Help that I need is if we can change the video to full time unlike the default recording which is limiting videos to 3 minutes? If we cannot do anything to the default 3 minutes thing, how do we join those videos in to one?

We cannot join them at the device level, you can use video editing tools to attach them.
Trust me it is better that way.
It is easy to download the required bits, instead of downloading the whole video.

How did you install without suction mount on the glass?

I'm planning to stick using a 3M tape, but I'm not sure if it will leave marks on the windshield.

I have got a same tape / glue type sticky to the mount that I have got with the cam! thats so strong that the cam / mount did not move so far. It has been few months now, I am not sure of the material that is used in that sticker, will refer to the Dashcam box and let you know if I find a clue

Thx fir sharing such a in depth review. I would like to add few points.  Night video quality must be excellent too. Also nobody has time to arrange for laptop to play footage, at that time dash camera having decent screen and inbuilt speaker would be good.

Also, imagine someone overtaking from wrong side and collides from behind, Front camera will have no evidence. Here comes the importance of rear recording.

You may search dual recording on Google.

I m personally using this from link

It has all above features just in ₹8500.

Have a safe driving friends m

Thanks buddy for sharing this info. I have been using the dash cam for over an year now and its very helpful. I have been successful in sharing the pics with traffic police via whatsapp too.

I did enough research before I bought one and planning to pick a new one (pref. EKEN H9R or FITFORT). My suggestion for others who plan to buy... buy one with 170 degrees wide angle with loop recording. Rest all is secondary.

Hi Sagar,

I looked at banggood.com for EKEN H9R and it has 2 models priced around 3500 & 5500. Haven't done the comparison so far but will do it shortly. It's available at amazon.com for about USD 60+

The other one, FITFORT is also from Amazon.com for about USD 60+

I look at the number of people giving the ratings and what the rating is before buying. Both these are at 4.5/5.

If you know someone traveling from US then you can order it. If you have to look at buying from India only then you can look at Procus Rush 4k action camara (rated 4/5) available at amazon.in for 5500/-.

To add further... the ones I mentioned can be used as regular 4k cams and not limited to Dash Cams.

Hi Ranger,

Unless you are professional photographer then these are no way in comparison.

Dash cams are also available for about 2k and 99% of then work good in day time but they become hopeless in night time ( I'll share the pics & videos from my dash cam and difference between day & night).

The ones I mentioned above are action cams... They can be used for regular video capturing as well as dash cam.

Hi Sai Vardhan Bro,

I am using it from last few months and I am satisfied with quality. I find price reasonable after doing R&D about other models of Transcend, HP, Garmin. This dash cam seems costly but it has:

1) Rear Camera which records simultaneously as well as assist in parking. Not present in Transcend, HP.

2) Comes with Free OBD Cable worth Rs. 1200, USB cable and USB adaptor.

3) 1 year replacement warranty. (Transcend says warranty void in high temperature. All covers only manufacturing defect)

4) Field of View is huge 170 degree compared to cheap models. ( Others has 130-150 degree)

5) Night quality excellent.

6) Inbuilt 4 inch IP Full HD Screen to play the video on the spot. Transcend, HP has small screen with low resolution.

7) Price is just Rs. 8500 which is much less than Base models of Transcend, HP, Garmin.

8) 15 days money return guarantee they say (verify before buying)

I hope I didn't sound like the marketing executive of that brand & I request moderator not to block me. It's just my personal experience, I wish everyone use good quality dash camera to stay safe from Court Cases.

Well...I'll say... you should not worry about the back side. I go with the funda ... when some one crashed into you from back for most of the reason it is his fault and not ours... Simple rule... need to maintain distance with the vehicle in front. I may be wrong but that's how I follow :)

I had so many cases where 2 wheelers banging into my back bumper.

Action cam  should not be used a dash cam.

They are designed for different purposes.

Dash cam has a small battery, so that I won't generate heat during a continuous drive.
Action cam has a bigger battery, it is designed to work on longer stretches without any power supply.

Action cam is not designed to take continuous power input, Imagine using an action for 20 hours in a single stretch.
It will simply give up in a long run and can be dangerous too.

Performance is flawless.

It is cheap and night vision is excellent.

Only issue with YI? Inconsistent suction mount.
Many people are using 3M tape instead of suction mount.

I do not have this issue with Suction Mount too along with it's flawless functioning (Except for 3 Minute Video Recording ? ) and I remember I promised you that I will get back to you with details or any clue on which Glue has been used, I remember taking out that plaster while I have stuck it to my car! I am sure it was 3M, let me check and get back! I got this Dash Cam by YI from the USA.

Hi All,

I came across Xiaomi Rear view mirror with dash cam recorder.

Launch date : June 16th

Price : CYN 399, roughly translates to 4k INR

Features:

  • Sony IMX323 image sensor with 160 degree wide angle view(with f1.8, helps in low light)
  • 5inch IPS display
  • Voice controls
  • Parking monitor
  • Ability to record both sides
  • Micro SD card support upto 64GB
  • Is wifi enabled and supports  Mijia App

This is a newly launched version, previously there is a similar device called "70 steps" which has 135 degree view.

I feel like this is the one stop solution for all the issues.

Im planning to buy it.

Any inputs and suggestions on this version?

Looks very good.

Couldn't find any reviews online.

I don't think they will launch in India?

Gearbest or Alibaba is the only way to buy these stuff.

Any idea if it supports mobile connectivity like streaming music and maps?

Now I feel like upgrading to this dash cam ?

Now that I have just unwrapped this, it’s time for me to get this fixed. I just realised that the suction mount is missing in the box.

Can somebody suggest me where can I get the suction mount in Hyderabad for this as I couldn’t find it in the box.

Or ordering it online is the only option ? ?

Ouch,

I guess it will be difficult to source the suction mount.
Try AliExpress.

Or you can do some jugad with regular mount using 3M tape, which is not recommend(worst case scenario)

It took some time to route the wires through A-Pillar, but it is DIY.
No need to go to an installer.

Without suction mount, i think it will be difficult to mount the dash cam.
Even Jugad may not be very helpful.

It is better to buy a mount from AliExpress.

I'm using the Transcend Drivepro 230. It has built in GPS, so it stores time, date and location data. Records video in 1080P. Wi Fi feature allows transfer to Android and iOS phones through the Drivepro app. Bought it from the HVK Store. Cost 14.5K

I got mine for 4k. Using it from the past two years without any problem.

Apart from GPS, I don't see any major feature.

This  terms "DASH Cam With GPS" disappoints many customer like me once they receive the product.   I myself was also thinking earlier that GPS means , it will guide route  using Google Map on screen  and/or it will allow me to Track my car by mobile app. But all this assumptions are wrong.

This transcend,HP or Garmin etc which Provide GPS is just a GPS logger which registers the Geo-Coordinates in the video.  I guess that in USA/Canada where there may be different rules in different state/province, GPS Coordinates are helpful. But in India,  I guess just Video of Accident is enough to prove cause of accident.

Also this High priced dash cam still don't provide rear camera recording for double security and OBD cable for parking mode. For budget dash cam I look forward to Car Camera India.

Agree with your points.

GPS is not of a much use in India.

Having GPS will be an added advantage, but 15k is not value for money.

With 15k we are getting almost flag ship phones.I feel it is a day light robbery by Transcend.

A basic dash camera with good clarity will do.

YI is not bad either, we recently used it in out drive to Chikmagalur.
Clarity is good enough for our usage.

Can we present dash cam as proof during accidents?

Yes it's valid as per Information technology act.

But:

  •  It should not be tampered with. You should preserve it in its original form, which means : don't do any editing in it.
  • Your camera and whole apparatus would need to be submitted for examination.
  • Make a copy of its recording and get it validated as evidence as per procedure in IT act. ( just in case court/police looses your original recording)
  • Report the matter to police and give them the original version as evidence. (keep a copy after getting it validated, for yourself)

After using Yi Dashcam for over a year, my satisfaction factor has decreased considerably

1. It stops recording randomly (not sure if its only me)

2. The suction stand can't withstand Indian heat and falls off when the car is parked under direct sunlight

3. Though images are clear, I noticed that number plates of oncoming vehicles are blurry when we're traveling at 40+ speed and the other vehicle at 20+ speed.. (I tried taking screenshots of the videos to check the # but it didn't work out). I guess a 4k cam would help

4. I now need an in car dashcam (rear dashcam)

I've tried looking on the net and didn't come up with any better options.

Any suggestions are welcome

Thanks,

Vishu

Hi,

I am agree with Musafir's suggestions. They all 3 are very good brands.

However, I had bitter experience of Custom Clearance and had to pay heavy custom duty while order from Outside India.

So I bought VIOFO dashcam from here https://www.amazon.in/A129DUO-Recorder-Starvis-Capacitor-Hardwire/dp/B07PZ3QL9B

and I am very happy by its Clarity and Features.

I also bought VIOFO Hardwire kit & Extra CPL Filter Lens for rear cam from Amazon India so I can keep recording ON when in Movies or parking at unknown places.

Though images are clear, I noticed that number plates of oncoming vehicles are blurry when we're traveling at 40+ speed and the other vehicle at 20+ speed.. (I tried taking screenshots of the videos to check the # but it didn't work out). I guess a 4k cam would help

This problem exists in most of the dash cams.
Plates are not clearly visible above 50 kmph.

Did you try to very them on PC. In a mobile there will lot of noise, when you zoom in.

Most of the Chinese dash cams lack quality. They are made to help us during emergency situations. We can't expect them to produce good quality visuals.  Windshield glare itself will kill the quality. GoPro is the only way to get quality footage(outside mount). But it is not an ideal dash cam. Not worth it.
