Hyderabad to Pondicherry details needed

Recommended Posts

I am planning a trip to Pondicherry next month by road. Can anyone please share their ideas about how to reach there. What are the must things to do.

What is the best route by road?

I heard there are couple of sea beaches. Any ideas would be really appreciated.

Hey Puducherry is a lovely place with pristine clear water beaches...
Take the Hyd - Chennai (NAM Express way)
Chennai - Mahabalipuram - Puducherry (take the East Coast Road - ECR) lovely road n good views

Do not miss Mahabalipuram and enroute Mahabalipuram - VGP Golden Beach, Crocodile Park should you have time

Hi @Mainak, Welcome to the club.

Pondicherry is one of the most serene beach destinations in India which is nicknamed the French colony of the south.

It reflects a unique harmony between the Indian culture and the french colonialism.

Beaches, French architectural wonders and a wide range of churches contribute to the beauty of Pondy..

Let me list a few places one shouldn't miss:

1) Sri Aurobindo Ashram

2) Auroville

3) Immaculate Conception Cathedral church

4) Basilica of the sacred heart of Jesus

5) Promenade beach

6) French war memorial

7) Pondicherry museum

8) Arikamedu

9) Chunnambar backwaters

10) Paradise and Serenity beaches

There are usually 2 routes to do drive down to pondicherry.

Hyderabad --> Narketpally(take left) --> Nalgonda --> Piduguralla --> Addanki --> Ongole(take right) --> Chennai --> Pondicherry.I feel this route would be a little stressful though shorter when compared to another route because of small patch work enroute.

Hyderabad --> Suryapet --> Vijayawada --> Chennai --> Pondicherry

This route via Vijayawada is 4 lane all the way and less stressful but distances more than route 1.

Both roads are decent enough and I would suggest you to try out both the routes.

I would like to add in another place to the visit list which i felt was the best amongst the ones close to pondicherry.

Its 'Pichavaram' mangrove forest. It is the 2nd largest mangrove forest after Sunderbans and is ~60kms from Pondicherry. A boat ride into those backwaters would be a thrilling experience. I would recommend this place to all the people driving down to Pondicherry.

Go Via Chennai.
Roads are pretty good Hyderabad > Ongole > Nellore > Chennai

You can plan your stay either at Nellore or Chennai.
In Nellore we stayed in Minerva grand it is pretty decent.

TN has some covid restrictions, verify before going.

Hyderabad to Hamsaladeevi Beach - A hidden Paradise
After a long wait for the December trip, we kick started our vacation to the most beautiful Hamsaladeevi beach located in the Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh.
Usually many of them skip this place due to lack of accommodation, but you will find a decent stay in Vijayawada which is around 80 kms approximately from Hamsaladeevi. It is definitely worth travelling so far to see the beauty of this Sagara Sangamam, where river Krishna meets the Bay of Bengal.
We started at an early hour from Hyderabad and reached Vijayawada by 10 AM and checked into the OYO hotel. There are no food joints available at Hamsaladeevi beach so we packed the lunch from the hotel and headed out. Vijayawada to Hamsaladeevi drive took us 3 hours with some breaks.
Hamsaladeevi village is 24 kms away from Avanigadda and we reached Hamsaladeevi by 3 PM. After a long drive from Hyderabad, there was an adrenaline rush gushing out to see this most beautiful place and couldn't wait to snap the sandy beach and the 'river-beach' meeting point. This point is 2 km away from the beach (From Hamsaladeevi village, beach is 4 kms) and we drove our car on the beach side shore to the port to see the confluence.

      Distance : 376 km
      Ride: Honda City
      Fuel : Petrol
      Mileage : 15 kmpl
Hotel : OYO rooms (2000/- per night)
      Best Route 2016
      Hyderabad --> Suryapet --> Vijayawada -->Pedapulipaka --> Madduru --> Thotlavalluru --> Nimmagadda --> Avanigadda --> Nagayalanka --> Chodavaram --> Hamsaladeevi Beach
Note: Don't take any diversions from the mentioned route else you might end up between bad conditioned roads and longer distances as you pass
