Mumbai to Hyderabad road condition and route updates

Road trip : Mumbai to Hyderabad.

Old Route:
Mumbai --> Pune --> Solapur --> Akkalkot --> Kalaburgai --> Sedam --> Parigi --> Chevella --> Gachibowli (Hyderabad)

2021 Route update:

Mumbai --> Pune --> Solapur --> Zaheeraba --> Gachibowli (Hyderabad)

It is completely 4-lane road. Do road work we used to divert via Parigi. Now you can stick to national highway.

Friends - here's a brief synopsis of the Mumbai to Hyderabad drive on 29th April. Needless to say, @Ranger directions and suggestions were spot-on! ?

  1. Left Mumbai (Powai) at 5am - this was 30 minutes delayed from plan.
  2. By 5:45am, covered the 40km stretch to the start of the e-way.
  3. Khalapur @ 6am and Talegaon @ 7 am (123 kms from home).
  4. Bad traffic on the e-way with lots of heavy vehicles. It was a crawl in the ghats even without a single truck breakdown.
  5. exited the e-way at 7:20am.
  6. 8:15am & 172 kms - Pune city exit and start of NH 65. Drive through the Pune city section and through 235 kms of NH 65 can be trying because of cross traffic.
  7. Lots of nurseries & eateries in this section till Solapur.
  8. At 188 kms, Suruchi Restaurant and many mini restaurants dot the area
  9. At 200 kms, Vithal Kamat. For the record, we did not eat at either of these restaurants
  10. Refuelling of the Yeti done at BPCL bunk @ 358 kms (10:45am)
  11. The only point of confusion was when I reached a fork where the signage indicated the left fork going towards Solapur. Enquired with a local and was told that I should be taking the right fork as that was the Solapur bye-pass
  12. The road from Solapur to Akkalkot was a single road with no divider for the majority part. A section of it was getting tarred and there was 1 KM that was particularly nasty.
  13. Hit the Moroom Akalkot road @ 445 kms at 12:20pm
  14. At 1:30pm and 524 kms away from home, entered Kalaburgai/Gulbarga - the land of toor dal.
  15. Pulled into Hotel Lumbini Grand (1:45pm and 532 kms) for lunch. Fantastic recommendation, Ranger!! Good food and neat washrooms.
  16. Post lunch at 2:45pm, hit SH10 - 2 divider-less lanes.
  17. 4pm and 670 kms fromMumbai, entered the state of Telangana.
  18. Road changes character and the smooth Karnataka roads transform into rough patches!
  19. We pass by Chevella at 5:10pm (690 kms)
  20. Finally, 747 kms later and at 6:35pm, we pull into our destination at Srinagar Colony.

Overall, a fantastic drive exposing one to newer facts of the Indian landscape. This trip was all the more brilliant thanks to Ranger razor sharp advice and suggestions . Shall update with toll details and a complete log in a few days. Return journey is yet undecided - it could be either Hyderabad-Bangalore-Mumbai or directly back to Hyderabad. Keep you all posted. Till the, ciao!

Helpful information.
Once solapur to Hyderabad road is completed, Mumbai to Hyderabad is going to be a stress free drive.

Would love to see some pictures of Skoda Yeti, please click them on the return drive.

Beautiful car which is neglected by Indian market.

I used to drive Hyderabad to Mumbai regularly, since last 5 years, I am taking train/flight.

Zoom car made things easy, I'm depending on it completely.
Hyderabad to Solapur road is shame to the country. I don't understand how many years they take to complete it.

Once it is completed, It will start doing road trips again.

Good that you guys found out an alternative route. Thank you for the detailed information @Siju@Yeti

Dear Friends,

I have recently visited Hyderabad from Pune. As you all are aware, road from Pune to Solapur is excellent. However, from Solapur till we enter Karnataka (200 kms before HYD), the road is still under construction and you will see diversions. However, once you see the board "Welcome to Karnataka", you will have a sigh of relief, because it is newly laid four lane road until Hyderabad. It does have two tolls for 40 INR each. But the road is butter smooth with not even a single pothole.

I have been driving to Hyderabad from Pune for last 3 years and trust me, the road is lot better now, it's just 90-100 kms of patch which is still under construction.

Have a safe driving.

Regards,

Srinivas Neralla

Apologies for the very delayed response, @Ranger!! Thanks so much for your kind words! I do try and keep a log as this way I can give back in my own small way to this wonderful group that we have! And my wifey is a very capable partner in crime for this!!

I drove from Hyderabad to Kalyan back in 2007 and if I remember correctly, the stretch from ~ 70 Kms after crossing BHEL till Pune was not so great.

Too many diversions, roads were under construction and I see from the comments, it still is!!

God damn, so many years and still it is under construction!!!

Driving at Mumbai-Pune expressway felt like heaven after driving in Telangana and Karnataka.

Solapur to Hyderabad route improved a lot.
I would suggest you to stick to NH, instead to taking Kalaburgai route.
Around 50~60 kilometres of bad road, rest all is excellent.

Hi,

Planning to drive down from Mumbai to Hyderabad, can you please suggest which route to take ( depending upon the current road condition)

Is the road ( NH 65) via Zaheerabad better now or i should stick to via Kalaburagi route.

Thanks

Hello everyone.

I like to share my experience of driving on NH65 to solapur in month of March 2018.

I am totally agreed with @Ranger .Stick to NH 65 Route.

1.TELANGANA-My starting point was Shamshabad Airport.

Taken ORR ,exit from ORR,and continued on NH 65. After ORR road is good but very busy and at some points I faced jam.But that was easy to maintain 80-100kmph.U will again get good tarmac near zaheerabad.Keep driving on it .

2.KARNATKA- cross zaheerabad enter karnataka.Very good-Good- Average road continues till Omerga.Actually in this route tolls are maintained by L&T group and it's very good.

3.MH/KR border & MH-

After driving on good roads, once u hit the poor or even average road it seems like someone pinched ur driving-soul and u starts yelling to self "Why India needs a Bullet train".?

BTW this rough average patch is somewhere around 70-80 km.I am exactly not sure about it .I think this border is disputed land b/w MH-KAR....No one is taking serious responsibility...But work is in progress.

Omerga to 10-15km before Solapur is this rough patch where u have to drive carefully. Please remain stick to GOOGLE MAPS as it will be helpful at diversions (I did the same).

Crossing this bad patch continued on NH65 till solapur.

P.S- In case of crisis or confusion , please remain glued to GOOGLE MAPS.Because whatever road condition might be  outside ,atleast u ll reach your destination finally.

REMEMBER- 'Journey becomes successful, only when it complete."

HAPPY SAFE REVVING.THANKS.

You can continue to take the NH65 Soumo.. The road work is under progress but a lot better than before. I'm expecting it to be less than 50 kms of road construction work which is not bad either ways as it has small diversions.. And I would recommend you to start early to avoid the Truck traffic. Atleast 5:00 AM would be an ideal time to start the drive.

Stick to the regular route.

Route:
Hyderabad --> Zaheerabad --> Solapur --> Pune --> Mumbai

Hyderabad to Solapur :

Road work is almost completed between Hyderabad to Solapur.

Around 50 kilometers is still pending.

Solapur to Pune :
Excellent 4-lane toll road.

Pune to Mumbai:
6-lane expressway.

Can be done easily in a single day.
Plan in such a way that you don't caught up in Pune city traffic, while crossing it.

You can stick to this regular route. Do plan to start your drive early so that you can reach Zaheerabad for breakfast and Solapur for lunch. Pune for a tea break and Mumbai for lunch.

There are many food options after you cross Zaheerabad but small dhabas and for lunch on the Solapur Highway, many options for lunch like Vithal Kaamat restaurants all along the highway.

Hey Praxy,

I would recommend the below route for you and definitely 4 AM start would be the best time.

Mumbai - Pune - Solapur - Zaheerabad - Hyderabad.

Road Condition:

Mumbai to Pune :
Flawless 6-lane expressway.

Pune to Solapur :
Super good 4-lane road.

Solapur to Hyderabad :

Few bad stretches and diversions due to road construction work

About 50 to 70 kilo meters.

The above is the best possible route for you to reach Hyderabad amongst the available options.

Can I know which car would you be driving and also places of accommodations in which place?

It can done easily, if you start at 4AM.

Only Major hurdles are Pune city traffic and 60 kilometres of bad stretch once you cross Solapur.

More than 90% is 4-lane, rest of 2-lane is pathetic.

Very less food options( decent) between Solapur to Hyderabad.

Plan accordingly.

Total time will be around ~14 hours, including breaks.

Since you are starting early in the morning(4AM) you will reach before 9PM

Hey Neeraj, The road conditions are more or less still the same. Hasn't seen much of a progress in this stretch.. which is still the only best option to reach Solapur. Drive between Naldurg and Solapur is the most bad stretch.

Road condition around Solapur can not improve due to the heavy vehicle movement there.. Expect very bad roads..

Now we have around 50 kilometers of bad section before Solapur.

Roads are improving at a very slow pace.

Once it is completed, Hyderabad to Mumbai can be done in a single day without any stress.

Food options are still pretty less between Hyderabad to Solapur. There are no fancy hotels like Hyderabad to Vijayawada.

Yes correct ...As per my last two trips to Shirdi,  I can see the road condition between OMERGA to NALDURG has improved a lot . The earlier route near NALDURG fort was horrible , but now it is very smooth. I am quite sure the stretch between NALDURG and SOLAPUR  must have improved as well.

Regarding the food option between SOLAPUR and HYDERABAD, I saw many road side DHABAS but yes my personal feeling says many of them are not suitable  if  we have families with us  especially during night times ... Many times  we take lunch/dinner in HOTEL SAI PRASAD just before NALDURG, which has quite good ambience. There is also KOHINOOR restaurant , which is very big with good ambience and I have seen many BIG BUSES like ORANGE,KESINENI,DIWAKAR etc...used to stop there. I think in coming days we will have many food outlets with roads are improving.

When I travelled to MUMBAI ( APRIL- 2015 ) , my MAP MY INDIA navigation took me inside PUNE CITY to catch MUBAI-PUNE EXPRESSWAY . Though I was lucky to enter PUNE around 11:30 to 12PM , still there were lots of traffic inside PUNE city . Do we have a BYPASS before PUNE to catch MUMBAI-PUNE expressway ?

I started from HYDERABAD at around 12:30 PM and reach MUMBAI (HOTEL RENAISSANCE , POWAI) at 2:20 AM with LUNCH,DINNER&BIO breaks. That time (APRIL-2015) , I was not aware of our INDIA-DRIVE website....Else I would have put a detailed travel report......????

Road condition is good through out the drive. Humnabad to Solapur is under construction.

2. Safety
No safety issues, it is one of the busiest road. Avoid night drive between Solapur to Humnabad

3. Halt points
Can consider Solapur,

Solapur to Hyderabad wont have much options.

It is completely 4-lane road. You need to take a halt at Hyderabad

Day 1: Mumbai > Pune > Solapur > Zaheerabad > Hyderabad

Day 2:Hyderabad > Vijayawada > Machilipatnam

WagonR can do it without any issues.

Start early in the morning from Mumbai, keep an eye on fog.

Gachibowli is ideal for stopover, you can find plenty of hotels. I would suggest Radisson.
If you are looking for any specific budget, I can suggest some options.

Vijayawada to Rajamundry roads are under construction, can be time consuming.

Do update us when you are done with the trip. Do share details your food stops as well.

Completed my Mumbai - Rajahmundry Trip on Hyundai Santro Xing in last 2 days. Was just following the Google Maps (Kms RUn was around 1200 )

Here are some points in journey.

Day 1:

1. Started at 6 AM against planned 5:30 AM from Mumbai Western Suburbs. Hit some traffic around Airoli Toll seems due diversion of Lorry/Container traffic so cost around 20-30 mins extra.

2. Stopped after Khalapur Toll at food plaza for breakfast and small rest for vehicle for around 30 mins. This food court has good range for food options available.

3.Started again passed thru Pune-Aundh Road there was bit of traffic since running bit with local city traffic also around 10 AM which was on & off bit busy road.

4.Moved out of Pune and had breif 10 min around 11 AM after crossed pune limits on NH65.

5.Headed towards Solapur after Pune limits the road condition was superb and literally no traffic you can easily cruze around 80 Kmph minimum.

6.Halted around Indrapur for 10 mins & then stopped for Lunch at Hotel Nisarg a pretty good eatery place just around 10 kms before solapur & filled fuel.

7.Started from Solapur road condition was very for good for around 60 kms stretch from Solapur once you take left on to NH65 from Solapur.

8.From around Andur road was rough in patches and lots of diversion and narrow 2 lanes roads for good 20-30 Kms till around Karnataka state border.

9.At Karnataka border checks/screening were going for Corona purpose Rapid Antigen tests would be mandatory for those who don't have -ve Test report for passengers from MH. Normal adults will under go thermal screening Test for Senior Citizens after things are fine give a go ahead.

10.From There Road condition was pretty good baring some patches before Zaheerabad but lots a highway Patrolling check by KA Police which would irritate since it happens pretty much 10 Kms apart.

11.Reached HYB (Kondapur) around 9 PM bit late than expected due to unwanted delays and had overnight halt at friend's place.

Day 2:

1.After Overnight Rest and fresh up in morning started from HYB around 9 AM since place of stay was near Nehru ORR hardly took 15 mins to make it to it.

2.Nehru ORR/Airport route was top class if just can cruze and if you have cruze control in you vehicle will certainly enjoy drive more 😃

3.Exited from Exit Point 11 from ORR towards Vijayawada and from there road of NH65 was bit rough and patchy for around 20 Kms during this you will pass by Ramoji Film City.

4.After this patch it was smooth ride till around Suryapet where took brief break after around 180 Kms from HYB to 7 Food court for around 30-40 mins had refreshment and fuel top up around 11:40 AM and continued onward journey.

5.NH65 Suryapet-Vijayawada outers was Top Class ride.

6.Reached Vijayawada around 2 PM and passed thru it to move to NH16 which was bit irritating traffic consumed good 1 Hr to pass thru.

7.Once headed towards Eluru it was ok ride with lots expansion works going and diversions possibly it could take at least a year to be fine and smooth I feel.

8.Headed towards Tadepalligudem with brief 15 mins break at around Bhimadolu road side tree.

9.From it was pretty good ride barring few patches and made it to Rajahmundry around 6 PM.

Overall Run time was around 22-24 hrs after cutting out breaks in between by driving around 80 Kmph speeds at Majority, also hit 90-100 Kmph speeds for brief periods but for my vehicle and convenience preferred to do it at 80 Kmph.

Tolls will cost you around 1400 rupees over all.

This ends my first long drive hope this details helps travelers to some extent during their journey. Thanks for fellow members who guided with inputs earlier.

Stay Safe & Drive Safe.

Excellent information @SRG

Thanks a lot for sharing such a detailed update about your trip.
Any restaurants or food joints you would want to pitch in for as a special mention enroute?

Thanks Sagar, had mentioned  a few food points where I had stopped for food, owing to prevailing conditions I was pretty choosy so mentioning them again.

Day 1

  1. Stopped after Khalapur Toll at food plaza for breakfast at food court & it has good range for food options available, this is Mumbai-Pune Express Highway just after Toll plaza you can see clear hoardings/Display signs before it. Add to Mumbai-Pune Express has 2-3 such food court options en-route either side.
  2. Stopped for Lunch at Hotel Nisarg a pretty decent eatery place just around 10 kms before solapur.

Day 2

  1. Near Suryapet where took brief break at 7 Food court this has KFC, Coffee Day, some other eateries and restaurant serving tiffins, lunch etc.

  2. Another Option noticed was Subbaiah Hotel which falls around 10 mins before (7 Kms apart as per google maps) while coming from HYB side this can be said as option for Andhra Meals.

Other options if I observe shall and share here on a possible return journey some days later. One thing i can say is due to pandemic majority of the Dhabas/Eateries are closed :(

Gachibowli is ideal for stopover, you can find plenty of hotels. I would suggest Radisson.
If you are looking for any specific budget, I can suggest some options.

Any hotels for stay at around ORR(Gachibowli/Kondapur) just for overnight stay don't want spend a bomb specifically looking in 1K-3K options this is on return trip to Mumbai..

Halt around HYB and start again early hours of coming Sunday morning to proceed further towards Pune/Mumbai.

There are a lot pretty decent OYO rooms options available And also other service apartment options available in the same areas where you are looking for around the same budget. You could pick any on MMT as there are too many decent options in your desired price range to choose for..

You need not worry as of now no particular restrictions in place can't predict if any new restrictions could be in place or not since its good 2-3 weeks to go, so keep following news.

With the situation would suggest to have a RT-PCR test done around 3-4 days before start of journey also now they have cut down cost of test to Rs.500 in Maharashtra, In my case had to wait for my father undertake Rapid antigen test at Karnataka border while heading towards HYB. Possibly the officer on duty then wasn't having such liking towards MH going by his words so better have a -ve RT-PCR certificate handy.

Shouldn't have a issue in drive since can say 90% of stretch is superb in Mumbai-HYB route. If you can start early morning and can make it easily by late evening to HYB if its a bigger car it shall be much more easier. Just follow google maps, Good luck.

In my case it was a small car (Santro Xing) and it was my first such long drive didn't have much issue and did it easily in around 14-15 Hrs. In return infact saved much more time 😀

Return Journey from Rajamundry to Pune.

Day 1:

1. Started from Rajahmundry around after 8:30 AM took Kovvur-Deverapalli road which leads towards Eluru and joins NH16 later its bit shorter route compared to complete NH16 via Ravulapalem-Vijayawada route and good 3 toll booths skipped.

2.Route had bit of traffic and also has good amount of Lorry traffic so wasn't smooth sailing to start with gradually it eased out condition of route was pretty fine but had few diversions once joined NH16 it was smooth sail till Vijayawada city limits.

3.Hit some traffic around vijayawada city took Kanakadurga Flyover and took a lunch break around 12:45 PM you have decent options till around ibrahimpatnam for food on Vijayawada-HYB NH65.

4.Once you hit NH65 towards HYB its just cruise mode after Vijayawada did non stop till Suryapet took a brief halt for refreshment at 7 Food court.

5.Restarted towards HYB and made it to ORR and from there since I planned for halt at Zaheerabad drove for around 80 Kms on ORR itself and took Exit 3 which is for Mumbai Highway.

6.Made it to Zaheerabad around 7:50 PM and stayed at (Hotel Siddhi International) over night.

7. Possibly due to covid scenario occupancy was less, food was pretty good only Veg option available which is very welcome for me. They do provide complimentary BF between (7:30 AM - 10:30 AM)

Day 2:

1. Didn't opt for BF since I had to start early, started at 6:30 AM did refueling and in 3-4 Kms made it to NH65 towards Solapur.

2.It was smooth ride and even Karnataka borders no issues except for 5 mins halt for police check owing to elections locally.

3.Just around Omerga near Maharastra borders where some stretches of road are two lanes and bit rough took brief halt of 10 mins around 9:30 AM.

4.Once clearing that its smooth ride Solapur. On Solapur- Pune Highway halted at Hotel Nisargh again for food had bit heavy breakfast around 10:30-10:45 AM since we don't want halt before Pune since very less options available.

5.After this food halt was done headed towards Pune it was very smooth ride and made it to Pune around 2:45 PM with a brief halt of 10 mins in between.

In major did drive around 80 Km/Hr speed rarely hitting 90s.. Over all it was pretty comfortable ride much better than our expectations.

@SRGthanks for the information.. I am travelling by brezza hope there won't be any issue I think...

If you know or heard anything on rtpcr new please let me know also...I will follow news sure..

If I don't have rtpcr...they will do rapid test at Karnataka boarder ? Max age in car is 35 only..

Since Brezza being bit of bigger vehicle you can do it easily in around 12-14 hrs..

But now till May 1st 7 AM restriction are in place in Maharashtra as of now you cannot start early also it would be advised to start bit early around 5-6 AM from Mumbai so that can make it to HYB by late evening at least, there could be some checks en-route owing to current situation.

If its not urgent and don't have valid reason better postpone your travel plan a bit. Keep an eye on further restrictions but with current scenario its better to have Covid negative report in hand ready for easy passage as more and more states are imposing stricter restrictions and also May 1st & 2nd fall on weekend so all states are now in weekend lockdown mode.

Please plan and travel safely. Good luck.  Also prefer to carry home made food along.

Road trip : Mumbai to Hyderabad.

Old Route:
Mumbai --> Pune --> Solapur --> Akkalkot --> Kalaburgai --> Sedam --> Parigi --> Chevella --> Gachibowli (Hyderabad)

Hi Siju thanks a lot for your detailed info.I am planning to drive tom to hyd from Mumbai .I am more relaxed by your details.
