Hyderabad to Goa Road Trip NOV 2020

Hyderabad > Belgaum >  Goa >  Belgaum > Hyderabad Travelogue Nov 2020:

 

Amateur in writing travelogues so please bear with me.

 

 

Total round Trip	2000 km
Drive	Ecosport

Road Condition	PFB Break up of roads. Overall Good (keeping in mind about past hyd <> goa roads) with speed bumps all over Ktaka.
Drive time	12 hrs from Hyd > Belguam (Including breaks to belgaum). I know who did Hyd > Goa directly but it’s around 16 hours. I feel road after belgaum will be scenic and not to be missed in night time, after all it’s a road trip. Hence I always do this peacefully during day light 😊
Hotel	Stayed in Pai Resort Belgaum for 1 night, 4 nights in IBIS Styles Calungate, 2 nights in Dream of Palolem resort, 1 night in Pai Resort Belgaum.
Trip Type and Participants	Full on leisure trip with no rush as we have 1-year old kid with us. Myself, My wife and my 1-year old kid.
Timeline	1st Nov 2020 – 9th Nov 2020 mid night
Places Covered	North Goa and South Goa

 

Followed below mentioned route To & from Hyd <> Goa:

 

Hyderabad > Humnabad >  Gulbarga (Ring Road without entering city) > Jewargi >  Bijapur (Ring Road) > Bagalkot > Belgaum >  Chorla Ghat > IBIS Styles Calungate Hotel.

 

1. Road from Hyderabad > Humnabad is NHAI and I don’t want to talk about it 😊. Couple of NHAI tolls each 90 INR.
2. Road from Humnabad > Gulbarga is two-way road which is good with speed bumps without any toll.
3. Road from Gulbarga > Jevargi > Bijapur is excellent two-way road with less traffic. We can easily cruise around 100-120 KMPH. However, we have lot of speed bumps and be mindful about them 😊. Couple of tolls in this stretch each around 70 INR.
4. Road from Bijapur to Bagalkot is excellent as well. Bagalkot to Belgaum is okayish road with some bad patches.
5. Road from Belgaum to Baaga Goa via chorla > saquelim > Bicholim > Mapusa is amidst Goa countryside and it’s scenic. However, chorla roads are real bad around 15-20 KMs but personally I was okay. Alternate routes from Belgaum > North Goa here are:

•   Via Tilari Ghats: I have done this route while returning and it’s average road for long stretch but it’s scenic and Tilari Ghat road specifically (has few hair pin bends) is a newly laid tarmac and it’s excellent.
•   Anmod Ghats: I didn’t do this but got to know from my friend (@hellboy Aqeel) that roads via Anmod are good.

 

Key Take Away on road conditions:

 

1. Lot of speed bumps across Karnataka.
2. Road constructions barely.
3. Few Bad Stretches (mainly chorla).
4. No detours etc., due to recent rains floods.
5. Finally, this is the best route via Belgaum 😊.
6. Once we enter Karnataka, we should stick to SH50 most of the part and follow above route. Google maps suggests some shorter routes and better to avoid it.
7. Please be mindful about the toll lane you are taking if you don’t have a fastag. It’s painful if we enter wrong lane now.
8. Do carry all the vehicle documents as there are random checkpoints in ktaka and mainly in Goa. 

 

Our Trip starts here:

 

My boy’s first birthday was on Nov 5th and we decided not to do it at home as we can’t limit participants in our family, and We don’t know what all they will bring in with them in Covid season 😊

 

Hence, we planned road trip to Goa and this is how it all started. Before goa, we did couple of trips with my kid to Karimnagar, Gottamgutta and he was responding well to road trips.

 

Regarding Corona in Goa, i've asked one of my friend if it's safe to visit goa now and he just responded asking "Is it safe to stay where you are staying now" haha. That befitting reply was all enough. Intention was there is no safe place today, corona is everywhere and we just have to live with it by taking precautions (SMS as mentioned by our @mit1682bro).

 

We've started at 8:30 am on 1st Nov 2020 Sunday and reached Belgaum by 8:30 PM including 1-2 hour breaks. We have halted in Belgaum (Pai Resort) so that we can see the lush green beauty of Chorla ghat during daytime. Pai Resorts is decent place to put up. I recommend this totally. There are few other resorts in Belgaum if you want to check out (regenta, treebo etc.,). 

 

Next day we started from Belgaum around 10 AM and reached Calungate by 3 PM. 

We booked IBIS Styles Calungate for 5D 4N and it was a decent stay. I recommend this hotel totally.

 

Got to know from my connections to avoid resorts in north goa since they were just opening (OCT 2020) and not in good condition. I believe it should be good now since Goa is all “UP and RUNNING” and back to normal. 

 

Day wise Itinerary:

 

To begin with, we planned to visit lot of places in goa but ended up going to only below ones. Avoided forts etc., which basically needs trekking and any exertion due to my kid. In a nutshell, we were travelling in car itself most of the time leisurely and we just loved it. To summarize, our new way of travelling is all about:

 

1. How do we get there, I just loved travelling to the destination leisurely and it’s not just about destination.
2. Destination
3. Good accommodation (with a kid)
4. Good food (exploring variety of foods and local cuisine). Honestly be it any food, nothing will satisfy me more than hyderabadi biryani & tandoori chicken.
5. Tuned our mind to miss few places instead of rushing.

 

Day 1 in Belgaum:

 

• Check-in Pai resorts. Rested here, had dinner and breakfast at in-house restaurant.

 

Day 2 in North Goa:

 

• Check-In Hotel
• Calungate beach visit

 

Day 3 in North Goa:

 

• Majorda beach
• Aarambol beach
• Vagator beach
• We thought of covering Arambol salt water lake, Anjuna beach sunset, Thalassa restaurant @Vagator but couldn’t do it.

 

Day 4 in North Goa:

 

• Baaga Beach, did a small Birthday Smash ceremony for my babies birthday. Attached youtube link below. Interested folks can watch the video.
• Reis Mogus fort visit.
• Fontainhas 
• Basilica of Bom Jesus church which was closed due to covid but we just checked out it's external beauty and headed to Mangushi temple. Temple was open for public and there were Handful of people. 

 

Day 5 in North Goa:

 

• We spent leisurely at hotel and wandering around Calungate streets shopping.

 

Day 6, 7 in Palolem south goa:
 

• Checked out IBIS and headed to south goa palolem beach which is 90 km from baaga. Route followed Baaga --> Calugante--> panjim --> Margao --> Canacona (palolem beach), It’s a straight road from panjim via margao which is under road windening process all along. I simply followed google maps while taking this route.

 

• En route to Palolem we have been to Mandovi River where we saw casinos (in process of opening and must be up and running by now) and visited Fisher man’s wharf Panjim for lunch. I personally felt FisherMans is excellent in Hyderabad & bangalore than Goa. Aesthetically Restaurant is very normal is Panjim and Calungate.

 

• Reached Palolem beach by 8PM. We booked a beach resort here and stayed here couple of nights. Beach resort name is “Dreams and Palolem, costed us 2500 INR for sea view room and it was good”. It has an in-house restaurant, ordered food from here all times and spent our time leisurely at this place. I've also done kayaking here. It's my first time and it was fun. Wasn't very risky to do it. 

 

Day 8:

 

• We checked out resort in Palolem and started to Belgaum via Tilari ghats. We thought of driving as much as we can on that day but ended up staying at Belgaum Pai Resorts again since this place was tried and tested and we felt comfortable. 

 

Day 9:

 

• We checked out from hotel at 10 AM and started to Hyderabad. Followed the same route to hyd I’ve mentioned above. Reached home by late night around 1 AM which made it 10 days trip 😀

 

This is all what we could cover. However, there are many other places in goa and time is never enough to cover those. We have variety of beaches (crowded, isolated etc.,), ancient Forts, Churches, Temples (mangushi, tambdi surla etc.,), back waters, river cruises, caisons, lush green forests, Shopping, Restaurants what not., It’s up to us what we want to cover and draft plan accordingly.

 

Restaurants:

 

On day 1, We carried food for lunch and thought of having some breakfast at Udipi (we have been to udipi when we did gottamgutta) at Muthangi ORR exit but crowd was like “Corona never happened at all”. We thought of doing in on our way and that’s a mistake we did as we couldn’t find any hotel worth visiting. Finally what we carried for lunch turned out to be Breakfast around 11 AM near Zaheerabad.

 

We had Dinner at Pai Resorts on day 1 and it was good. Breakfast was complimentary and we liked it at the resort’s price.

Needless to say, about the breakfast in IBIS North goa.

 

We tried few restaurants in North goa which are rated high & Max Saftey in Zomato. We also have swiggy and take away options as well. On another note most of them are just being opened and few others are in process of opening. Crowd in all the restaurants was very low, especially dinner time. I'm sure we will not be able to see this Goa again. Jotting down below which we felt deserve paying a visit:

 

• Just Lobo’s Calungate
• Palms and Sands beach shack Candolim
• De Baaga Deck
• Spice-IT in-house restaurant IBIS (had dinner buffet couple of times here as they were running buy 1 get 1 offer haha)
• FisherMan Calungate & Panjim. Food was good but overall restaurant theme of Hyderabad is way better than Goa. We tried Goan cuisine and my wife personally didn’t like the flavor (personal choice). Otherwise food was excellent.
• Arambol Beach Shack @ Sunbed. We just hated sea food here and thumb rule is to never have food at some random Shack.
• At Palolem, we had in-house restaurant and had food here itself. We didn’t step out of resort at palolem and we just loved it to be here.
• Lastly while returning to hyd, we did lunch Karnataka special meals @Annapurna belgaum. It was decent.
• Had lunch at Kamat Hotel Bijapur on return day to Hyderabad. Enroute Kamat we checked out bijapur gol gumaj from outside. It was very beautiful from distance itself. 
• Had Dinner at Udipi hotel near Muthangi ORR.

Well we're two families, and one of the reason we're starting so early is because kids will be sleeping for the first 6 hours or so. We're honestly hoping that they co operate for rest of the journey. 😀

Started from Hyderabad at 3:00 AM this morning and reached the hotel in South Goa by 8:00 PM, with a couple of long hourly breaks through the journey. No major hurdles but for the terrible stretch between Belgaum and Anmod checkpoint. The road is in very bad shape and 50 km took about 2 hours. 

 

Will provide further details in additional posts.

Awesome post, that was one leisure trip. Unfortunately my daughter is 8 and she is having her online classes and I have my office, so I am planning to hit the road and be back within 4-5 days. Planning for a day's drive in my Safari Storme (with 85 k on odo so slightly skeptical) from Hyderabad to Goa. How are the ghat sections from Belgaum to Goa, truck jams or not (I travelled 2-3 years ago in Feb and it was hell of jams due to unloading at Jetties). I am planning to south Goa, hence, I think the route will be a little different. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks

Chorla, Tilari ghats are specifically for north. Anmod can be taken for South, looks like that also has few bad patches. Not sure if roads are good via hubli and Karwar. 

 

Traffic was very normal in chorla and tilari. There wasn't any place where I was stuck in Goa or enroute Goa due to traffic.

It seems the roads have gone from bad to worst, I did the last road trip from Hyderabad to Goa, started at 5 in the morning and reached Goa (Verca) at 7 PM with one hour long break.

Just came back from hyd on Saturday. Sadly, Belgaum-Khanapur-Bhimgarh WLS seems to be equally bad as chorla with lot of potholes and oncoming traffic in Bhimgarh WLS. Anmod ghat by itself is quite good, with the exception of the edges of the concrete roads and dumb oncoming drivers who want to overtake on blind curves. Surprisingly didn't seem so bad on the way to Hyd 2 weeks ago, probably because we hit Bhimgarh WLS early morning about 7am.
I would say its even-steven at the moment between chorla and anmod. 

 

Started at 5.30am from near Paradise and reached North Goa by 6.30pm, with about 1.5 hrs of bio /fuel /lunch breaks

Belgaum to Anmod check post and Mollem to Bainguinim was quite tiring. In between, Anmod checkpost to Mollem was a breeze

Don't really recall the village names but, Jevargi to bijapur city bypass road without any detours (SH55) which is an excellent state highway.

 

From Bijapur bypass to Bagalkot highway, I followed Google maps to land on Bagalkot highway. Driven for 1 km roughly on bijapur to hubli 4 way NH road. We have a take a detour on this NH to land on Bagalkot state highway.

So I am Planning for Goa and Gokaharna starting from Hyderabad on Dec 19 and Planning to stay in North Goa and this is the first time I am visiting to Goa

 

Could you please let me know the route suggested by You via Chorla Ghat is better or Tirala Ghat is better.

 

Also could you suggest which route is best from Gokaharna to Hyderabad for returning back.

The route via Tilari ghat is much better when compared to Chorla and also very scenic..

For me both were more or less same.. However as per others feedback tilari is Better than chorla, but Plz note that there is very less traffic in tilari road, hence make sure you do this during day light.

@santosh @sagar I am staying at Regalia Luxury Resort in North Goa and when checked this route in Google maps it's routing through Arambol and not Belgaum. . Could you suggest which one should we consider also the overall kms via Belgaum is coming to around 720 kms.

 

So shall I follow the Google Maps or the route suggested by Santosh to reach Goa.

 

Please can you share your thoughts on this.

Set google maps to Vagator beach, If you are unsure of the other route. 
Vagator beach, gmaps will navigate via most common route.

I personally wouldn't recommend taking any ghat road after belgaum during night time. Day light is recommended. Plan accordingly so that you can drive in the ghat road during day light.

I would recommend you to do this route via Tilari ghat which is more scenic and a much better route though it falls a little longer.

Hyderabad to Goa doesn't have any fancy restaurants. 

Ideal stopovers

1. Zaheerabad
2. Gulbarga
3. Bagalkot

Above places have decent options.
