HYDERABAD TO BHUBANESWAR(ODISHA) ROAD TRIP

Friends ....I hope all of you are doing well in such Pandemic Time.....Wishing all of you to have safe on-coming road trips ....as everything slowly opening up .

I am planning for a  road trip from Hyderabad to Bhubaneswar around end of October-2020.  My hometown is Bhubaneswar . This trip was planned in Apill-2020 with a 2 days halt at Vizag but cancelled due to lockdown. This time pretty determined to do this trip due to WFH & kids online classes......😀😀😀

This will be my first road trip to Bhubaneswar from Hyderabad. I will drive single in my TOYOTA ETIOS SEDAN (VD-SP) with my wife and my two daughters. I have confidence to drive this 1100 km in one day  ( exactly my home is 1084km from PUPPALAGUDA , MANIKONDA near to AIIMs BHUBANESWAR). Earlier I had driven around 21hrs in one day for covering 753 km (HYDERABAD TO OMKARESWAR ....the ROAD condition was very very bad on this trip) . So I think I can drive through this 1100km as I expect the roads are almost 4 lane along with NATIONAL HIGHWAY all the way. Of-course  there will be couple of breaks like BREAKFAST,LUNCH,EVENING SNACKs and probably dinner as well along with couple of bio breaks as needed.

Couple of preparation notes as below.

1. It will be one day drive to Bhubaneswar without any night halt .

2. Planning to start at Morning 4AM and reach Bhubaneswar by late evening on the same day.

3. The car has new tyres ( replaced all 4 in Feb-2019 ) and Battery was replaced around Mid-2019. The annual servicing was also done in Aug-2020. The pollution check was done with insurance is renewed. So the vehicle is all set for the long trip.

4. The FASTTAG account has been charged with Rs.1200. I guess till Bhubaneswar  Rs.1200 toll should be enough .

5. Planning to pack all food items (breakfast, lunch, snacks, fruits ) and water cartoons.  No plan at all to go to any local shop/restaurant except re-fuelling on the way to Bhubaneswar due to Covid .

3. I guess it will be all straight road (NATIONAL HIGHWAY) till Bhubaneswar. Plan to take HYDERABAD-VIJAYAWADA-ELURU-RAJAHMUNDRY-TUNI-VISAKHAPATNAM-VIZIANAGARAM-SRIKAKULAM-BERHAMPUR-BHUBANESWAR. The roads should be mostly 4 lane till Bhubaneswar and roads must be in good condition as per feedback received from fellow friends.

While crossing cities like VIJAYAWADA, RAJAHMUNDRY , VISAKHAPATNAM , I guess , I need not to enter inside these cities. It will just be like passing  these cities on the highway like we cross KURNOOL,ANANTAPUR etc....while travelling to Bangalore.

I also assume that no more E-PASS is required to pass through ANDHRA PRADESH and there should not be long queues of vehicle in the AP check posts as heared earlier  during lockdown times.

Any feedback or suggestion from all of you whoever has done this road trip recently will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

There is another route from HYDERABAD to BHUBANESWAR , Which I am planning to take .

HYDERABAD-BHADRACHALAM-MALKANGIRI-JEYPORE-KORAPUT-RAYAGADA-ADAVA-MOHNA-TAPTAPANI-DIGAPAHANDI-BERHAMPUR-BHUBANESWAR.

This route till DIGAPAHANDI is full of GHATs and very scenic. If the road conditions are ok, Driving in this route would be a absolute bliss.

I am quite familiar with the route JEYPORE-KORAPUT-RAYAGADA-ADAVA-MOHNA-TAPTAPANI-DIGAPAHANDI-BERHAMPUR-BHUBANESWAR  though not sure how is the road condition in these recent years having not been to my home town (BUBANESWAR ) from last 4 years. As per some feedback from friends , the stretch JEYPORE-KORAPUT-RAYAGADA-ADAVA-MOHNA-TAPTAPANI-DIGAPAHANDI is good . The stretch between BERHAMPUR-BHUBANESWAR is undergoing road widening . So there are lots of diversions.

My main worry in this route is the road condition between HYDERABAD to BHADRACHALAM and BHADRACHALAM to MALKANGIRI . If anyone has recently travelled in this route kindly let me know the ROAD CONDITION.

Finally the trip from HYDERABAD to BHUBANESWAR has been completed . I took the route

HYDERABAD-SURYAPET-KHAMMAM-BHADRACHALAM-MALKANGIRI-KORAPUT-RAYAGADA-ADAVA-MOHNA-DIGAPAHANDI-BERHAMPUR-BHUBANESWAR.

It was a complete 1300 km drive with  2 night halt in KORAPUT. Some sight seeing were done around KORAPUT.

The roads are good through out this trip except a around total 40km bad stretch throughout ....The roads are full of forest and breathtaking from BHADRACHALAM-MALKANGIRI-KORAPUT-RAYAGADA-ADAVA-MOHNA-DIGAPAHANDI.....If someone wants to enjoy nature and love forest ...Please take this stretch ...It will not disappoint you ...

I will upload all the road picture and live videos of this entire trip within next couple of days ...

It is a complete TOLL FREE ROAD from SURYAPET-KHAMMAM-BHADRACHALAM-MALKANGIRI-KORAPUT-RAYAGADA-ADAVA-MOHNA-DIGAPAHANDI-BERHAMPUR. I paid two tolls from HYDERABAD to SURYA PET and two tolls from BERHAMPUR to BHUBANESWAR.

Excellent @BORNDRIVER.. This is totally a new route to me.. Waiting to see the pictures of the beautiful views you had come across and the bad roads of the 40 kms you mentioned... Koraput is a place totally new to my ears.. How developed is this and how are the accommodation options to stay with families?

KORAPUT is a part of south orissa and it is basically a hill town. It is abasically a tribal area but has developed into a decent town with all modern facilities. Not only KORAPUT but its surroundig areas like JEYPORE,SUNABEDA, MALKANGIRI,DAMANJODI,RAYAGADA are very very decent towns. This south orissa is full of DENSE FOREST, MOUNTAINS ,DENSE FOREST etc ....The SOUTH ORISSA trip itself is a full itnery . There are many water falls .....small montaiin rivers along the way .....

If we see GOOGLE MAP the stretch BHADRACHALAM-MALKANGIRI-KORAPUT-RAYAGADA-ADAVA-MOHNA-DIGAPAHANDI is 581 km. Out of this 581 km 500km is dense forest & ghat roads. In every 1 to 2 km there will be turn and even blind and sharp turns.

From MALKANGIRI TO KORAPUT,We pass through JEYPORE which is one of the biggest town in south orissa. I prefr to do night halt in JEYPORE but I have relatives in KORAPUT . So I stayed in KORAPUT . In KORAPUT there are not much options but there are few. I stayed in HOTEL RAJ RESIDENCY. Not a good one but average one but qite ok for 1 to 2 night stay . You will get this hotel details in GOOGLE and can be booked through GOIBIBO.

KORAPUT,JEYPORE,SUNABEDA, MALKANGIRI,DAMANJODI,RAYAGADA are very very decent towns.

I will upload all the photos of road condition and videos very shortly.

Here are the complete Trip details with pictures from HYDERABAD TO BHUBANESWAR via BHADRACHALAM -MALKANGIRI-KORAPUT.

My most TRUSTED FRIEND my TOYOTA ETIOS was fully ready to have this drive . In-fact it was very eagerly waiting for this long trip after a prolong corona virus lockdown period.

Being in CORONA VIRUS pandemic time ,We preferred to pack our food (breakfast, lunch and snacks) before and a full cartoon of water bottle in the car . The MAPMYINDIA NAVGATION was set and in parallel the GOOGLE MAP was also ready for cross check .

Between MAPMYINDIA and GOOGLE MAP , It turns out that GOOGLE MAP was more accurate in directing proper direction.

I will break my blog in below stretches.

1. HYDERABAD-VIJAYAWADA EXIT-SURYAPET-KHAMMAM EXIT
2. KHAMMAM EXIT TILL KHAMMAM & KHAMMAM TO BHADRACHALAM
3. BHADRACHALAM TO MALKANGIRI
4. MALKANGIRI TO KORAPUT
5. KORAPUT TO RAYAGADA (VIA KAKIRIGUMA)
6. RAYAGADA TO BERHAMPUR (VIA JK-PUR,KOLNARA,RAMNAGUDA,GUMUDA,ADAVA,MOHNA,TAPTAPANI,DIGAPAHANDI)
7. BERHAMPUR TO BHUBANESWAR (VIA CHHATRAPUR BY-PASS,GANJAM BYPASS, BALUGAON BY-PASS,KHURDHA BYPASS)

1. HYDERABAD-VIJAYAWADA EXIT-SURYAPET-KHAMMAM EXIT

We started from Hyderabad at Morning 5AM from PUPPALAGUDA,MANIKONDA and hit the ORR through LANCO HILLs & NANAKRAMGUDA JUNCTION in just 10mins and cruised along till VIJAYAWADA EXIT on ORR. We took the VIJAYAWADA exit. After toll booth little patchy road starts but still it is possible to pass with an average speed of 60km/hr. This patchy road continues for around 20km and thereafter it is crystal clear beautiful VIJAYAWADA highway . However though it was around 6AM to 7AM , the traffic was still very high on VIJAYAWADA highway. We cruised till KHAMMAM exit .The road condition of VIJAYAWADA HIGHWAY till KHAMMAM exit is as below.

2. KHAMMAM EXIT TILL KHAMMAM & KHAMMAM TO BHADRACHALAM

Till KHAMMAM & onwards till BHADRACHALAM the ROAD condition is decent . It is SINGLE LANE ROAD but wide enough to cruise through 80 TO 100(if get some free stretch). The only problem I found till KHAMMAM & KHAMMAM to BHADRACHALAM is occaissional POT HOLEs. If you will be drving in high speed for sure you are going to hit those pot holes and your car is going to take a hit . So better to maintain a speed of around 60 to 80 to avoid sudden braking or hitting those pot holes . The ROAD

ROAD CONDITION TILL KHAMMAM & BHADRACHALAM is as below

3. BHADRACHALAM TO MALKANGIRI

Honestly speaking from BHADRACHALAM onwards till DIGAPAHANDI, I wanted to discover in this trip. Being a native of ODISHA and a resident of SOUTH ODISHA (RAYAGADA,GUNUPUR) for around 8 years , I knew these SOUTH ODISHA little bit. The SOUTH ODISHA is full of DENSE FOREST,MOUNTAINS, GHAT ROADs, small rivers along the roads & montains. The beauty of our SOUTH ODISHA and the adventure road was the factor that attacts me to take this route from HYDERABAD to BHUBANESWAR.

Another important factor is the area MALKANGIRI,JEYPORE,KORAPUT ....etc are NAXAL hit areas . So there was a fear in taking this route but eventually I decided to take this route but planned to cover the stretch BHADRACHALAM to KORAPUT before SUNSET. So whoever wants to travel to BHUBANESWAR via BHADRACHALAM and MALKANGIRI must start early from HYDERABAD (maximum by 4 AM or 5AM) .

After crossing BHADRACHALAM , We need to take the MAREDUMILI route and as all of us know it is absolutely a blessing to drive in BHADRACHALAM-MAREDUMILI route. The NH-30 is absolutely a gem till I drive . It is like single lane express highway without a single pot holes. After drving around 50 to 60km on NH-30 from BHADRACHALAM, the NH-30 turns left towards JAGDALPUR. We can also go to MALKANGIRI by following NH-30 till SUKUMA and then take a turn towards MALKANGIRI . However I have heared that SUKUMA to MALKANGIRI road condition not good . So did not follow NH-30 . Instead I went straight towards MAREDUMILI and took a diversion to NH-326. The NH-326 is all the way inside ODISHA till DIGAPAHANDI.

The diversion to NH-326 is a small narrow road which eventually connect to NH-326 . The NH-326 is also in good condition with some occassional small patches inside the FOREST . The NH-326 passes through DENSE FOREST with lots of warning symbols and police posts due to NAXAL hit areas. There are full of FLUOROSCENT marks on the trees on both side for easy drive during night.

Another very big important factor is very limited FOOD and RE-FUELING OPTION in this stretch. As it pass through DENSE FOREST , GHATs  , It is better to check your food and fuel option before taking this 170km stretch. There are options available but they are limited . So if you are travelling with FAMILY ,It is better to have food and re-fuel before BHADRACHALAM or after MALKANGIRI.

The road condition of BHADRACHALAM TILL MALKANGIRI is below.

NH-30 is absolutely a GEM to drive . Please see below.

20201028_122644.jpg.4ec886979e81963a63cc86ef8b8f639a.jpg20201028_122736.jpg.a9e8edf4703dd74405ec4f27b3ae5237.jpg20201028_123300.jpg.66faf4e1d42245673b17bed0ad5407c2.jpg20201028_123309.jpg.d4c6348838dc6997a257d6d20d8f1c93.jpg20201028_124846.jpg.1c976255e6511d97e83966a803b8a95c.jpg20201028_124855.jpg.50334794077cc9e73a03dafd5815f749.jpg20201028_132251.jpg.7611b1a4bf9f96e03da262f5e7cd99ed.jpg20201028_130859.jpg.d36aff71f98f0456c1d0d76995e6d7b5.jpg20201028_130908.jpg.7e667b5971fa5e97d5eca475ff3f3eac.jpg

Now I am joining NH-326 towards MALKANGIRI.

4. MALKANGIRI TO KORAPUT

The ROAD CONDITION is decent and pass through several tribal villages, ghats, forest, ups & downs .

It is all total around 650 km from HYDERABAD to KORAPUT and I must say who loves nature and love to drive can take this route . This route will not disappoint at all .

From KORAPUT to BHUBANESWAR , I will cover in another section.

Enjoy and Happy Drive.

In KORAPUT , We stayed in HOTEL RAJ RESIDENCY. There are not much staying option in KORAPUT . However this Hotel is a decent one for 1 to 2 night stay. The food (breakfast & dinner) was good. In GOIBIBO.COM , We can see this hotel. The plan was to stay for 1 night but we changed the plan to take some more rest and to move around KORAPUT to see some local places.

There are quite a good waterfalls around. The one near to KORAPUT are RANI DUDUMA WATER FALL & DUDUMA WATER FALL.The details can be seen in GOOGLE. Between these two the near one and easily approachable was RANI DUDUMA WATER FALL . It is around 50km from KORAPUT via SUNABEDA.

We all might be knowing SUNABEDA due to the HAL (HINDUSTAN AERONAUTICS LIMITED) factory. The HAL has two establishment . One in Bengaluru & another one in SUNABEDA. Around KORAPUT there is another place called DAMANJODI where NALCO (NATIONAL ALUMINIUM COMPANY) is situated and it has BAUXITE mines in PANCHPATMALI hills. From DAMANJODI to PANCHPATMALI it is around 20km and the ROAD is one of the most scenic & it is complete GHAT all the way to the TOP of PANCHPATMALI hills. Try to see some YOUTUBE videos about PANCHPATMALI hills. The view is not less than MUNNAR or OOTY.Once you reach PANCHPATMALI , You can see the GIANT TRUCKs, CRANES, OPEN CAST MINES,HYDRA,JCBs ......etc. The peoples are mostly TRIBALs there and NALCO has a very good establishment there as well for BAUXITE mines.

Between DAMANJODI+PANCHPATMALI and SUNABEDA+RANI DUDUMA, We decided to follow SUNABEDA+RANI DUDUMA. From KORAPUT to SUNABEDA , It is around 20km only and DAMANJODI is around 30km in the same direction (after travelling some distance from KORAPUT the road bifurcates to SUNABEDA & DAMANJODI).The ROAD CONDITION from KORAPUT to SUNABEDA to RANI DUDUMA is as below. Couple of pictures of RANI DUDUMA WATER FALL is as shown below as well. As we approach RANI DUDUMA WATERFALL, the roads become narrow and and last 5 km to waterfall becomes DENSE. There is a very good car parking near to WATERFALL and from CAR PARKING we need to walk for around 300m to 400m to reach WATERFALL. There is a very nice walkway built to the waterfall.

To go to RANI DUDUMA WATER FALL, We need to pass SUNABEDA and SEMILIGUDA and on SEMILIGUDA MAIN MARKET  need to take right turn towards NANDAPUR . The roads from SEMILIGUDA to NANDAPUR is fantastic like single lane express highway with very nice views. The ROAD CONDITION FROM KORAPUT TO SUNABEDA TO SEMILIGUDA.

OVERALL it was a nice place to visit and very happy to cover this local sight seeing place though   small waterfall.

The other waterfall that is DUDUMA WATERFALL is even bigger and it is one of the biggest WATERFALL in ODISHA state . We again returned to HOTEL RAJ RESIDENCY and get ready for the next day trip to BHUBANESWAR from KORAPUT .

The next leg of this journey was from KORAPUT to BHUBANESWAR. It is around 500km out of which 350km will be DENSE FOREST , GHATs, a lot of sharp & blind turns but will be a very joyful drive who loves forest & nature. The KORAPUT to BHUBANESWAR will pass through below places in sequential order.

1. KORAPUT
2. KAKIRIGUMA
3. LAKSHMIPUR
4. RAYAGADA
5. JK PUR
6. GUMUDA
7. ADAVA
8. MOHANA
9. TAPTAPANI
10.DIGAPAHHANDI
11.BERHAMPUR
12.CHHATRAPUR
13.GANJAM
14.BALUGAON
15.KHURDHA
17.BHUBANESWAR

In ths entire 500km stretch the road condition will never dissapoint you. There are ocassional patchy stretch for 2 to 3 km but there could be only 5 to 6 patchy stretches. So I would say you will have only total 20 to 25 km bad stretch in between . So for me the road condition is very good. The good news is that the road repairing work on those patchy stretch is in full swing and I expect those patchy stretches will be repaired very quick time.

Throughout these 500km , Till DIGAPAHANDI only RAYAGADA is a very decent town but everything else is like small villages or NACs etc. There are plenty of FUEL OUTLET . So no worry and even good amount of food options but those are like DHABAs.

KORAPUT TO RAYAGADA

We left HOTEL RAJ RESIDENCY at around 8 AM and had breakfast outside in KORAPUT in a small TIFFIN outlet. Aroud 9 AM , We left KORAPUT. We cruise through the HILL roads and forest . The weather was perfect and sunny. As it was End Of OCTOBER , The weather was little cold that time . So it was a pefect weather to drive.

We cruise through KAKIRIGUMA,LAKSHMIPUR till RAYAGADA. There is a little patchy stretch of around 4 to 5 km near KAKIRIGUMA but it is not full of pot holes. So we just need to slow down and pass through easily. There will be several GHAT section from KORAPUT to RAYAGADA. Please see the road condition and some pictures below.

RAYAGADA TO BERHAMPUR

The RAYAGADA is a very very decent town with very very well connected via TRAIN and ROAD . It is like a hill station . We had stayed in this town for around 2 years during my schooling time . Immediately after RAYAGADA (after 10km) , We enter into a small town JK PUR . Here we have famous JK PAPER MILL from where the JK PAPERs are being supplied to entire part of INDIA . It is a very very big PAPER MILL with a very big township.

After crossing JK PUR , A big GHAT section will start . This probably is the biggest GHAT in the entire stretch from KORAPUT to RAYAGADA. We cruise through this GHAT wihout much difficulty and reach GUMUDA. In GUMUDA the road bifurcates to GUNUPUR and towards BHUBANESWAR. After GUMUDA we have a big bridge on RIVER BANSADHARA. After crossing this BRIDGE , We had our lunch in a small hotel (HOTEL RAVINDRA). This HOTEL is like a small cottage and by the look of it probably you dont like it as it is like a typical village house. However believe me the food is awesome and I have never eaten such tasty food anywhere else . The MUTTON , CHICKEN, PRAWN,FISH everything is so pefectly cooked . If you are coming from RAYAGADA side after crossing RIVER BANSADHARA BRIDGE, immediately take a sharp left turn down the bridge. It is a typical village road. In just 200meter you can locate this HOTEL. If you are coming from BHUBANESWAR side , You need to take a right turn to go down the bridge.

I will suggest whoever is travelling in this stretch , Please try the food here . My WORD "IT WILL NOT DISAPPOINT YOU".

After our LUNCH , We cruise through ADAVA , MOHNA , TAPTAPANI. The TAPTAPANI is famous fot HOT SPRING WATER.It is on the HILLs . After TAPTAPANI the JUNGLE/GHAT ROAD/FOREST all finish and now we will drive through URBAN POPULATED areas till BERHAMPUR. The road is fantastic.

This is where we enter RAYAGADA TOWN.

BERHAMPUR TO BHUBANESWAR

It is famous NH-16 throughout. It was 4 lane express highway previously betwen BERHAMPUR & BHUBANESWAR. Now the road is being converted into 6 LANE EXPRESS HIGHWAY. So there are lots of diversion being made but in the diversions the road condition is good. The only problem is traffic jam in these diversions. The TRAFFIC between BERHAPUR & BHUBANESWAR is HUGH and the fact is this NH-16 is all the way to KOLKATA . So this NH-16 is too busy  with heavy vehicles and with entire stretch widening going on the traffic jam is little troublesome. This stretch of 140km will take around 3 to 4 hour.

So overall it was a vey very enjoyable and nice drive from HYDERABAD TO BHUBANESWAR via BHDRACHALAM KORAPUT. During RETURN I am planning to take the other route from BHUBANESWAR TO HYDERBAD via VISAKHAPATNAM,VIZIANAGARAM,RAJMUNDRY & VIJAYAWADA.

Still continue to work from BHUBANESWAR and planning to return to HYDERABAD arund end of FEBRUARY 2021. I will capture all the pictures during my return trip and upload. Till than happy and safe driving.....😀😀

Some more extra pictures as shown below of this entire stretch.

How many toll gates and check points were in this route? And overall how much toll you have paid. Can you please share?

As far as I remember it was only ORR TOLL gate and one on VIJAYAWADA highway . After I take a diversion towards KHAMMAM there is absolutely no toll gate Till BERHAMPUR (ODISHA) . Between BERHAMPUR and bhubaneswar , I guess there is two toll gates . So from KHAMMAM-BHADRACHALAM-MALKANGIRI-KORAPUT-RAYAGADA-BERHAMPUR , there is absolutely no toll at all.

Hyderabad to Hamsaladeevi Beach - A hidden Paradise

After a long wait for the December trip, we kick started our vacation to the most beautiful Hamsaladeevi beach located in the Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh.

Usually many of them skip this place due to lack of accommodation, but you will find a decent stay in Vijayawada which is around 80 kms approximately from Hamsaladeevi. It is definitely worth travelling so far to see the beauty of this Sagara Sangamam, where river Krishna meets the Bay of Bengal.

We started at an early hour from Hyderabad and reached Vijayawada by 10 AM and checked into the OYO hotel. There are no food joints available at Hamsaladeevi beach so we packed the lunch from the hotel and headed out. Vijayawada to Hamsaladeevi drive took us 3 hours with some breaks.

Hamsaladeevi village is 24 kms away from Avanigadda and we reached Hamsaladeevi by 3 PM. After a long drive from Hyderabad, there was an adrenaline rush gushing out to see this most beautiful place and couldn't wait to snap the sandy beach and the 'river-beach' meeting point. This point is 2 km away from the beach (From Hamsaladeevi village, beach is 4 kms) and we drove our car on the beach side shore to the port to see the confluence.
